IBAN and BIC in EUR paymentsIBAN and BIC in EUR payments

From January 1, 2007, in accordance with EU legislation, European banks must exclusively use the International Bank Account Number (IBAN) and SWIFT Bank Identifier Code (BIC) as the account identifier of the recipient on all international payments in euro (EUR) sent within the EU countries and EEA countries (Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein and Switzerland).

The Danske Bank Group will regard incoming EUR commercial payments without valid BIC and IBAN as non-STP (Straight-Through-Processing) payments in accordance with the accepted resolutions, will process such payments on a best-effort basis, and will additionally charge a non-STP fee according to the fee schedules.

Providing an IBAN number and a BIC on payment orders ensures that a payment is transferred directly into the beneficiary's account without unnecessary delays and costs. The IBAN enables the bank to check, immediately upon receipt of payment message, whether the account numbers are correct. This ensures a fast crediting to the account. At the same time, the client avoids fees for manual processing of payment transfers.

The International Bank Account Number (IBAN) is an international standard for identifying bank accounts across national borders. The IBAN was developed to facilitate payments within the European Union. The IBAN is made up of the code that identifies the country the account belongs to, the account holder's bank and the account number itself. The IBAN makes it easier and faster to process cross-border payments.

Ask your foreign supplier, that is the owner of the account (beneficiary), to notify you of its IBAN and BIC so that you can write it on the payment orders that you send to the Bank. If your supplier is located in the EU, the IBAN should already appear on their invoices.

Is an IBAN number you are using correct?
Here you can check whether an IBAN is valid.

This check will not confirm that the bank account exists, simply that the format of the IBAN conforms to the required standard for the bank and country.

Key in the IBAN and press the Check button.
